ORCHID MANTIS

A rose isn't necessarily a rose: Predator mimics flowers to lure in prey

Mantis
An adult female orchid mantis,     sits on a leaf in the forest.

The orchid mantis, which resembles a flower, takes on this appearance in order to lure in prey, researchers say.

In fact, orchid mantises are even better at drawing in insects than some actual blossoms; they not only look like flowers, but they also beat the petally beauties at their own game, scientists added.

Nature presents many examples of organisms evolving to mimic other creatures. For instance, many butterfly species imitate the toxic monarch butterfly, presumably to deter predators from eating them.

If I were a bug, I'm sure I would do the same thing.

THE resemblance is uncanny...a puppy who looks just like Adolf Hitler. This canine doppelganger, called Patch, has a dark mark on his top lip which mirrors the Nazi leader’s famous moustache.

HOUSE PRICES may be rocketing but this Hobbit-esque house was built for just £150.

Incredibly this rural residence was constructed without the use of a single power tool using only earth, clay and straw.

It is now being rented out - with the tenant paying in milk.

Resourceful Michael Buck erected this 'cob house' at the bottom of his garden in Oxfordshire.

Cob houses are built according to a method thought to date back to prehistoric times, using just nature's building materials.

The former art teacher also saved cash by kitting out his home using only unwanted items donated or rescued from skips.

The 59-year-old smallholder said: "There's this idea people have to spend their whole lives paying off their mortgage doing something they don't enjoy which I wanted to challenge."

Mr Buck, from just outside Oxford, spent two years gathering the materials and constructing the house.

The base of the house was made by mixing a clay-based subsoil with sand, straw, animal dung and water.

Although it has no electricity, the pretty cottage boasts free running water from a nearby spring and walls painted with a chalk and plant resin mixture.

It has a kitchen and dining area, and a bunk-style bed to maximise space below.

Heat is provided by a wood-burning stove - and thanks to the cob walls and thatched roof the house is surprisingly well-insulated.

A shallow well outside the front door even acts as a primitive fridge to keep milk and other liquids cool.

The isolated retreat even has its own thatched outhouse complete with composting toilet.

I remember the first time I saw one of these hobbit style homes from The Lord of the Rings movies, I wanted to live in one. But, I'm weird like that.

262 Pounds Of Pot Falls From The San Diego Sky, Two Arrested

These suspected drug dealers got high. Really high.

But the marijuana they allegedly hoped to deliver won't be getting anyone high.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection found more than 260 pounds of marijuana bundled tightly together in San Diego last Monday, and arrested two men who allegedly showed up to claim the prize, NBC Bay Area reported.

Officials say an ultra-light aircraft coming from Mexico dropped the massive payload -- which was tied to a large metal cage used to hold cargo -- in a field near Brown Field Airport. The Office of Air and Marine tracked the plane as it crossed the border.

According to Raw Story, the plane crossed at 4:15 a.m. and dropped the ten heavy bundles before escaping back across the border.

Two suspects arrested at the drop zone were a 49-year-old, and a 32-year-old undocumented immigrant, according to CBS LA. The street value of the ganja was $157,000.

Adrian Laroze Briskey Allegedly Killed Michelle Shepherd Because Auburn Beat Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A woman says her sister was shot to death over the annual Alabama-Auburn football game.

Police say 28-year-old Adrian Laroze Briskey was charged Monday with murder in the killing of fellow Crimson Tide fan, 36-year-old Michelle Shepherd Saturday. The killing outside an apartment complex outside Birmingham came just moments after Alabama lost to archrival Auburn in a last-second thriller.Nekesa Shepherd said she witnessed the killing. She said Briskey flew into a rage when she saw the sisters and others joking that the Crimson Tide's loss wasn't as bad as if the NBA's Miami Heat had lost.

Shepherd told The Associated Press that the suspect said they weren't really Alabama fans and started shooting.

Police say they are looking at whether the game's outcome was the motive.

German policeman held for death of man he met on cannibal website.

BERLIN |

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German policeman has been arrested after the chopped-up body of a man he met on a fetishist website for cannibalism was found buried in his garden, police in the eastern city of Dresden said on Friday.

"The victim had been fantasizing about being killed and eaten by someone else since his youth," Dresden police chief Dieter Kroll told a news conference. It was not immediately clear whether any act of cannibalism had taken place.

The investigation recalled the case of Armin Meiwes, dubbed the "Cannibal of Rothenburg", who killed and ate a man who had advertised on the Internet for someone to kill him "and leave no trace". Meiwes, who filmed the act, received a life sentence in 2006.

Dresden police said the suspect was a 55-year-old who worked as a technical expert in the criminal investigation department. The victim was identified only as a 59-year-old man from Hanover and the case was being treated as murder, they said.

All I can say is, Yikes!!!
